The Made in New York Animation Project is a free program of the Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) in partnership with The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the Animation Project that provides students (ages 12-21) with the technical training and therapeutic resources they need to pursue careers in the animation sector. We use an online platform to provide a therapeutic space for young people across New York City to connect, reduce feelings of hopelessness and isolation and process the logistical, social and emotional challenges, both separate from and related to the COVID-19 health crisis. The MINY Animation Project therapists are trained to work with youth in our city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods and have a background in social-emotional learning and development, trauma and crisis management. We incorporate the creative arts therapies to instill hope, build community and foster emotional and behavioral regulation while setting current and future goals. The Made In NY virtual curriculum is designed to engage students and provide them with continuity in skill-building, creative and imaginative thinking and professional development. Animators and Licensed Creative Arts Therapists lead the curriculum via Zoom.
Participation helps young people qualify for paid internships in this burgeoning field, and aims to create learning opportunities in digital animation opening doors to careers in sought-after areas of the entertainment industry.
